Why you hit 16 against a 10 — the actual math

You're dealt a 10 and a 6. The dealer shows a ten. The chart says hit. Your gut says: "If I hit, I bust 62% of the time. How can that possibly be right?"

Your gut is doing real math, and the math it's doing is correct. Hitting a hard 16 busts on any 6, 7, 8, 9, or ten-value card — 8 of the 13 ranks, roughly 62% of the time. What your gut is missing is the other half of the comparison: what standing actually costs you.

Standing isn't safe. It just loses more slowly.

When you stand on 16, you can never win the hand yourself — 16 beats nothing. Your only way to win is for the dealer to bust. So the entire value of standing rides on one question: how often does a dealer with a ten up bust?

The answer: not nearly often enough. Counting only the rounds where the dealer doesn't already have blackjack (the only rounds where your decision matters), a dealer showing a ten finishes with 17 through 21 roughly 77% of the time. They bust only about 23% of the time.

Standing on 16 vs 10 wins about 23 hands out of 100 and loses the other 77. That's an expected value of roughly −0.54: you lose about 54 cents of every dollar you bet.

Sit with that number for a second. The "safe" play — the one that feels like protecting your money — burns more than half your bet on average. There is no safety in this hand. There was never going to be.

What hitting buys you

Yes, hitting busts about 62% of the time, and those hands are gone. But the other 38% of the time you improve to a hand that can actually win — a 17 through 21 that no longer depends purely on a dealer bust. Those saved hands buy back just enough value to edge out standing:

Notice two things. First, every option loses money. A hard 16 against a ten is simply a bad hand; no decision can rescue it. Second, the gap between hitting and standing is razor thin — under a cent per dollar. This is the closest call in all of basic strategy, which is exactly why it feels so wrong. Your instincts can't feel a half-cent edge. The math can.

The real best play: surrender

Here's the part most recreational players never learn. If the table offers late surrender, giving up half your bet has an EV of exactly −0.50 — and −0.50 beats losing ≈54 cents either way. That's why the book says surrender 16 vs 10 when you can, and hit when you can't. Surrendering feels like quitting. It's actually the only option at the table that keeps more than 45 cents of your dollar in this spot.

When standing becomes right (and why charts can't tell you)

One more wrinkle that proves the point of learning the why. The chart cell for "16 vs 10" assumes a two-card 16. But make your 16 out of three or more cards — say 7-5-4 — and standing quietly becomes the better play.

The reason is beautiful: the small cards that would save your 16 (a 4 or a 5) are exactly the cards already sitting in your hand. You've consumed some of your own outs. The hit gets slightly worse, and with a margin this thin, "slightly worse" is enough to flip the decision.

A paper chart has no cell for that. A player who understands EV sees it immediately.
